The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the global bid (buy) and ask (sell) prices. It's the rate banks use to trade among themselves — the true value of one currency relative to another.
When you exchange money at banks or ATMs, they add a markup called a "spread" (typically 0.5% to 5%). Having access to the true mid-market rate gives you a benchmark to evaluate any offer.

Common questions about currency conversion, exchange rates, and using Tixya.
All rates are sourced from the Frankfurter API, which uses daily reference rates published by the European Central Bank (ECB). These are mid-market rates — the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the global forex market. They are the same underlying rates used by Google Finance, XE.com, and Bloomberg.
Banks and currency exchange services add a markup (called a "spread") to the mid-market rate. This spread typically ranges from 0.5% for online challenger banks to 6–12% for airport kiosks. Tixya shows the unmodified mid-market rate, which serves as your benchmark. Any rate worse than that includes a cost built in by your provider.
The ECB publishes new reference rates once per working day, typically around 16:00 Central European Time. Weekends and EU public holidays show the last available rate. On Tixya, rates are cached for 5 minutes to reduce API load, so you'll always see the latest published ECB rate within that window.
